英語表現： “try to do” or “try doing” の違いは？

「”try to do” or “try doing”?」

私時代の義務教育英語では、”to do = doing” と教わった記憶があるのですが、どうも、ネイティブの人の解説によると、両者の意味合いは結構、異なるようです。

“verb” → 「動詞」のこと

実行するには困難が伴う、非常に難しい、やってみても失敗する可能性が高い、という意味が強い

ex.

Maria tried to climb Mt. Everest.

I tried to watch Paranormal Activity, but it was too scary !
※ “Paranormal Activity” はホラー映画の名前

Deepak tried to study, but he was too tired.

ためしにやってみる、それほど難しくはない、何が起こるか分からない、アドバイス（やってみたら？）、という意味が強い

ex.

Try adding a salt to your potatoes.
